A fine Catholic gentleman has died. Donald John Coughlin, aged 82, at the Rosewood Retirement Residence. Son of Ambrose and Florence Coughlin, brother of the late Joan McIntyre, Bernard, and Nora Thomas. Devoted and loving husband of Fran (1999). Baptized at St. Clare's Church, Toronto, Don and Fran married there 20 years later. They built a home in King Township where they raised a family of six: Peter (Margaret Ford), Kingston, Catherine (Paul Ecker), Barrie, Stephen (Barbara Duckitt), Brampton, Tom (Debbie Borland), Parson, B.C., Andy (Anne Marie Darling), Delaware, Ont., and Mary Jo (Mark Pietras), Georgetown. Don was an electrician by trade, a church and community volunteer as duty called, and a carpenter, skier, sailor, curler, wine maker, traveller and jokester by inclination. When Fran became a mature student at Ryerson, Don sold his beloved home in King and they moved to Etobicoke. When Fran faced cancer in 1984, they became part of the community in Tamworth, building their dream home on Beaver Lake and retiring there in 1993. Don travelled to the Yukon and Ireland, and loved talking about those experiences. A stroke in 2004 necessitated a move from ‘the lake’ to the Rosewood. We are grateful to the staff there for their kindness and good humour. Having this happy home allowed Don to become, while not the oldest, the person with the longest tenure among the residents. The years at the Rosewood were lived with acceptance and humility. His presence was of great benefit for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren Kathleen (John Zimmerman), Danielle (Grant Krisman) and Brendan Coughlin, Nicole Lavigne, Jake Ecker and nieces Emma and Hanna Lavigne Wilson, Adam and Liam Coughlin, Leif Coughlin (Hélène Cassista) and Nicole (Michael Bombardier and children Monico, Madison, Austin, Caleb and Mackenzie), Nick, Noelle and Renee Coughlin and Andrew, Shannon and Steven Pietras. Thank you to the community at St. Paul the Apostle parish, Fr. Leo Byrne pastor, and the many members of the pastoral care team. They provided regular visits and support. Dr. Laing McFadzean, in Tamworth, is a rare breed. He is skilled, compassionate and attentive. Family and friends will be received at the Gordon F. Tompkins Funeral Home - Township Chapel 435 Davis Drive (Taylor Kidd Blvd. & Centennial Drive) on Wednesday, April 6, 2016 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Paul the Apostle Church 1111 Taylor Kidd Blvd. on Thursday, April 7, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Cremation to follow. Rite of committal prayers at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Cemetery, Erinsville at a later date. For those who wish, donations in memory of Don may be made to St. Elizabeth Health.
